CITIES BY BIKE, SMARTER COMMUNITIES

“Bici in Comune”is an initiative promoted by the Minister through the Department of Sports, via Sport e Salute S.p.A. and theNational Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI).

The project is aimed at all Italian municipalities with the goal of promoting cycling mobilityby encouraging the use of bicycles as a sustainable means of daily transportation and as a tool for a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as cycle tourism—a rapidly growing sector that can bring economic and social development to local communities.

The project“Cycling to Discover the Athens of the Sannio”showcases the areas of Agnone and Poggio Sannita through a network of digitized cycling routesthat connect historic centers, local businesses, museums, and natural landscapes.

Action Area 1 - Promoting Cycling

The project aims to create a network of themed cycling routes in the urban centers of Agnone and Poggio Sannita and along the rural paths connecting them. These routes, which will be digitized and published on the “Cammino delle Chiese Campestri” portal, will be enhanced with bike racks equipped with informational maps and QR codes. The goal is to highlight the main local points of cultural, artisanal, and gastronomic interest by promoting experiential and sustainable tourism. The routes will also be accessible by e-MTB, encouraging an inclusive and leisurely exploration of the area, in synergy with the national PINQuA program.

Action Area 2 - Upgrading of Bicycle Paths

The project involves the renovation and safety upgrades of the scenic bike and pedestrian path in Agnone, located in a wooded area overlooking the Verrino River. Road markings and signage will be installed to safely separate bicycle traffic from pedestrian traffic. The trail will be equipped with a new bike rack featuring a map. The goal is to integrate this route with the existing cycling tourism infrastructure, thereby enhancing the experience for users.

Action Area 3 - Events

The municipality will organize two main events along the route of the Granfondo MTB Atene del Sannio. The first, a competitive event, will take place in May and will involve about 100 cyclists, with a 40-km course included in the “Sulle Orme dei Sanniti” circuit. The second event, scheduled for September, will be a recreational cycling tour aimed at families, visitors, and enthusiasts. Both events aim to promote the region through physical activity, the exploration of its natural heritage, and the celebration of its culinary and wine specialties.
