June 27, 2026 “Exploring Atene del Sannio by Bike” – June 28, 2026 XCO Mountain Bike Race in Atene del Sannio
The Municipality of Agnone will organize two sporting and cultural events in conjunction with the Atene del Sannio MTB Granfondo. The first event,“Cycling to Discover the Atene del Sannio,”scheduled for June 27, will be a recreational cycling tour aimed at children and families. The second,“XCO Atene del Sannio,” a competitive race, will take place on June 28 and will involve about 100 cyclists on a 40-km course that is part of the “Sulle Orme dei Sanniti” circuit.
Both events are part of the “BICI IN COMUNE” project and aim to promote the local area through physical activityand the discovery of the natural heritage , and the showcasing the region’s culinary and wine specialties.
On June 28 in Agnone, along the trails surrounding the small promontory known as Monte Calvario, the “Atene del Sannio” XCO mountain bike race will take place. The ASD Molise Cycling Team, in collaboration with the Municipality of Agnone, is once again organizing an event this year that combines sports with the promotion of the region, aiming to showcase Molise and its treasures through a mountain bike race.
Since 2021, the event has consisted of a race covering approximately 42 kilometers; starting in 2025, the format has changed to a circuit of approximately 4.5 km to be completed five times, located near the city center.
The decision to adopt a format called XCO, in accordance with the standards of the Italian Cycling Federation, is also driven by the desire to provide young people and mountain bike enthusiasts visiting Agnone with a permanent circuit they can use year-round for training and fun, adding technical elements and variations edition after edition, effectively creating a permanent bike park just a few hundred meters from Agnone’s main street.
